Save Ontario Place

TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO:

WHEREAS Ontario Place is some of the most valuable public parkland in Ontario; and

WHEREAS the Auditor General is currently undertaking a value-for-money audit of the Conservatives’ plan to spend $650 million in taxpayer dollars for site preparation and to build an underground parking garage only to hand over these assets to a private-for-profit mega spa company with a 95-year lease; and

WHEREAS the Conservative government has boarded up Ontario Place and is planning to destroy 1500 mature trees which is habitat for 125 bird species and other wildlife, some of which are endangered; and

WHEREAS the Conservative government’s decisions related to the Greenbelt raised concerns about preferential treatment given to friends and donors, and those decisions are currently under investigation by the RCMP; and

WHEREAS the Ontario Place deal must be reversed if the Auditor General’s audit uncovers that the deal is part of the government’s pattern of giving preferential treatment;

THEREFORE WE THE UNDERSIGNED petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to halt any further redevelopment and save the trees at Ontario Place until the Auditor General releases the value-for-money report.
